Sama aloo Tikki is one dish which makes its accompaniments tastier. With the right mix of flavors, Sama ki Tikki has always been everyone’s favorite. It is just the appropriate option to prepare when you have a get-together or party at home. Be it kids or grownups, everyone just absolutely loves Sama ki Tikki.

Crisp and delicious patties made with samo/barnyarn millet, potato, and spices (food for fasting).I have kept this recipe very simple and easy to prepare. All you need is Sama ke Chawal – Vrat Ke Chawal with some boiled potatoes for binding and a few dry spices, and it’s done!

DISCLAIMER – If you do not consume a particular veggie or spice during Navratri, feel free to leave that out and follow your family vrat guidelines.

Ingredients
  

  • 1/4 cup Sama ke chawal (Moraiyo or barnyard millet)
  • 4 Boiled & Peeled Potato
  • 3 tbsp Coriander leaves Chopped
  • 3 Green Chillies chopped
  • 20-25 Coarsely ground roasted peanuts
  • 1 tsp Black pepper powder
  • Rock Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Oil for frying
  • 1 cup Water

Instructions
 

  • Collect all the required ingredients.
  • Wash and soak samo rice for 10 minutes. Discard soaking water, add 1 cup of water and samo rice in the deep vessel.
  • Cover the vessel and let it cook for 3-4 minutes on a low medium flame.
  • After 3 minutes, uncover it and turn off the flame. Let them cool to touch and then open the lid. Fluff up the rice and remove it to a bowl. Let it cool completely.
  • Take another bowl, grate the potatoes. I find it easier to grate the potatoes and then mash them.
  • Further, add all the ingredients like sea salt, black pepper powder, crushed roasted peanuts, green chili, coriander leaves and cooked samo rice (prepared in step 4).
  • Mix all the ingredients well.
  • Now grease your hands with some oil again and pinch small ball from the mixture and roll giving it a round shape. then flatten the dough ball and give it a shape like tikki.
  • Likewise, prepare tikkis until the entire dough is utilized and place them on a plate.
  • Once finish shaping, heat the oil in a pan for deep frying on medium heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, add few cutlets at a time and fry them on a low medium flame. Don’t disturb it for first 1-2 minutes otherwise, it will get a break.
  • Once browned and cooked from one side, flip them and fry the other side.
  • Drain the excess oil using a slotted spoon. Remove it to a paper towel-lined plate.
  • Serve hot with falahari green chutney or with curd.

recipe notes :

  • You can also use coarsely ground cashew nuts instead of coarsely ground peanuts.
  • You may avoid using green chilies and green coriander if you want.
  • Do not cook on low heat, tikkies will become greasy and will not be as crispy.
  • It takes 5 minutes to roast this tikkis.
  • You can make this tikki, with any oil used during fasts.
  • If you prefer more spices during fast, you can add it.
