Veg Shammi Kabab Recipe | Chana kabab Recipe | Vegetarian Kabab

Veg Shammi Kabab is an excellent as starters and even team up well with bread in a sandwich, with a bun in a burger and with pita bread too.

A non-vegetarian version of classic shammi kabab recipe usually made with gound meat or chicken. Here this vegetarian version of Shammi kabab uses black chickpeas instead of meat.

This is an excellent snack, you can serve on any occasion and this is a great wholesome after school snack too. You can serve this kababs hot or warm, with onion-mint-lime salad or mint chutney that is usually served with tandoori snacks.

VEG SHAMMI KABAB RECIPE

Ingredients

  • 2 big size Boiled & mashed Potato
  • 1 cup Dried Black chickpeas cooked kala chana
  • 1 big size Onions finely chopped
  • 1 inch Grated ginger
  • 4 tbsp Gram Flour besan
  • 3 Green Chilli Chopped
  • 2 tbsp Coriander leaves Chopped
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • Regular salt to taste
  • 1 tsp Chilli Flakes
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala
  • 1 tbsp Oil as required for Cooking

Instructions

  • Collect all the required ingredients.
  • In a large bowl add the chickpeas and mash them with a wooden spoon or a blender or your hands.
  • Just make a semi coarse mixture and not too smooth.
  • To the semi coarse mixture, add rest of the ingredients like mashed potatoes, onion chopped, salt, chilli flakes, garam masala, green chillies, lemon juice and coriander leaves.
  • Next add grated ginger and 2 tbsp besan.
  • Firstly mix roughly and check the mixture if it is binding or not. If not add rest of the besan also.
  • After checking it,mix them very well.
  • Grease your hands and take small amount of mixture in your hands and slightly flatten it like an aloo tikki or the shape of cutlet.
  • Make into small round shaped kababs or patties.
  • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a kadai on a medium flame.
  • When the oil becomes medium hot, then place the kababs in the pan or kadai.Bring to shallow fry the kababs in medium hot oil till crisp and browned on both sides.
  • Flip when one side is browned and shallow fry the second side. You can flip a couple of times for even browning.
  • Once done, then drain the kababs on kitchen paper napkins to remove excess oil.
  • Garnish kababs with mint leaves or coriander leaves. serve these veg shammi kababs hot.

how to make veg Shammi kabab (Step by step instructions with photos) :

1. Collect all the required ingredients.

recipe notes :

  • You can also make the kabab with chana dal or both chana dal and black chickpeas.
  • You can use a combination of chickpeas and gram dal in this recipe.
  • These kababs tend to break while shaping,so give pressure while shaping and be gentle while cooking.
  • You can use corn flour instead of besan.
  • You can also bake the kababs with a drizzle of oil for a healthier version.
  • You can deep fry the kababs too.
  • If frying kabab, for testing first fry one kabab in the oil. if it doesn’t break then you can safely fry the remaining kababs.
  • If it does break, then add some more chickpea flour/besan to the mixture.
  • You can also serve veg kababs with an onion-mint salad along with slices of lime and some mint chutney.
